The International Women's Day traces its origins back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the labor movement. During this period, industrialization and urbanization led to the growing strength of the working class and the continuous exploitation of workers' rights. Women workers, in In particular, found themselves in precarious positions, often at the bottom of the labor market, facing extremely harsh working conditions and low wages.
In 1889, the International Socialist Congress convened in Paris, where the proposal for establishing an International Women's Day was raised to commemorate the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago, United States. The massacre occurred on May 1, 1886, during the International Workers' Day, when Thousands of workers took to the demanding streets an eight-hour workday. However, the demonstration escalated into violent clashes, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, including many women workers.
In 1910, the Second International Conference of Socialist Women took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. Representatives such as Clara Zetkin from the German Social Democratic Party and Alexandra Kollontai from the Russian Bolshevik Party proposed the establishment of the International Women's Day. The conference adopted this proposal , decided to designate March 8th of each year as the International Women's Day. The first International Women's Day was celebrated simultaneously in various parts of the world in 1911, commemorating the struggles of women workers and their fight for labor rights.
The establishment of the International Women's Day is not only a tribute to and commemoration of women workers but also a call for attention and support for women's rights across all sectors of society, promoting gender equality and women's liberation. To this day, International Women's Day remains an important day of remembrance and advocacy for gender equality.
